# ENS subnames: what control does a parent name retain?

An ENS subname is a child name, such as a team member’s label beneath an organization’s name. Its rights depend on the parent’s registrar and permission design. ENS’s Name Wrapper can restrict parent control using fuses, but those restrictions and the child’s expiry must be inspected. A subname is not automatically permanent or independent of its parent.

## Key facts

- **Hierarchy:** Every non-root ENS name has a parent. ([ENS terminology](https://docs.ens.domains/terminology/))
- **Permissions:** Wrapped-name fuses can limit owner or parent actions. ([ENS Name Wrapper overview](https://docs.ens.domains/wrapper/overview/))
- **Expiry:** A wrapped child’s expiry cannot extend beyond its parent’s permitted expiry. ([ENS Name Wrapper expiry](https://docs.ens.domains/wrapper/expiry/))

## Find out what the parent can change

A parent can allocate child names through its chosen mechanism. A project may retain the ability to replace a subname, while another arrangement restricts that power. The readable name alone does not tell you which arrangement applies.

For wrapped names, examine the relevant parent-controlled fuses, ownership and expiry. “Emancipated” describes a particular permission state, not a blanket promise about every dependency.

## A child can expire before its parent

Suppose a wrapped parent is valid for three more years but a child is assigned one year. The parent’s longer period does not automatically give the child three years. Renewing the parent likewise does not by itself extend every child expiry.

Who can extend the child depends on its permissions. Check extension rights and the new expiry after any renewal operation.

## Choose a subname with its service assumptions in view

For a disposable profile label, dependence on an issuer may be acceptable. For a long-lived payment identity, the ability to retain or extend the name can matter much more. Match the intended use to the actual rights.

Keep the underlying account address available. Losing a name does not remove the account’s assets, but it can interrupt how others find its intended payment record.

## Questions

### Does buying a subname mean I own the parent name?

No. A child name has its own control arrangement under a parent. Purchasing or receiving the child does not transfer the parent registration.

### Will parent renewal automatically renew my wrapped subname?

Not necessarily. ENS’s wrapper documentation separates parent expiry from each child’s expiry and extension permissions.
