# Ethereum staking deposits: checking the contract and deposit data

A validator deposit funds a validator identified by its public signing key and associated withdrawal credentials. It is not a normal ETH payment to a validator’s public key, nor instant activation. Use the official staking setup flow, check the intended network and withdrawal authority, and verify both the deposit transaction and the resulting validator record.

## Key facts

- **Identification:** Deposit data identifies the validator public key. ([Ethereum proof-of-stake keys](https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/consensus-mechanisms/pos/keys/))
- **Withdrawal:** Withdrawal credentials determine the withdrawal destination and account type. ([Ethereum staking launchpad FAQ source](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ethereum/staking-launchpad/dev/src/pages/FAQ/index.jsx))
- **Lifecycle:** A funded validator still passes through activation processing. ([Ethereum proof of stake](https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/consensus-mechanisms/pos/))

## Check public deposit information before funding

The deposit associates ETH with a validator record rather than with an ordinary spending account. Public deposit data and secret signing material serve different purposes. The public identifier lets you inspect the validator; it is not a substitute for a payment address.

Withdrawal credentials deserve particular care because they govern where eligible funds can go. A convenient interface should not replace checking that the intended address and credential type are being used.

## An extra deposit is not a second validator

Suppose you submit more funds for the same validator public key. That is a top-up of that validator, not a newly generated validator identity. Whether the additional balance contributes to effective stake depends on its credential type and applicable limits.

For example, the documented regular-withdrawal and compounding types have different effective-balance limits. Do not infer the number of validators from the number of deposit transactions.

## Follow both layers of the result

First inspect whether the intended deposit transaction succeeded on the correct chain. Then inspect the validator record and activation state through consensus data. A pending queue is different from an execution failure.

Practice the workflow with the documented test network and keep recovery material secure. There is no need to publish a private key or mnemonic to prove that the deposit exists.

## Questions

### Can I send ETH directly to a validator public key?

A validator public key is not an ordinary Ethereum payment address. Use the documented staking deposit flow with the required deposit data.

Evidence: [Ethereum proof-of-stake keys](https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/consensus-mechanisms/pos/keys/); [Ethereum staking launchpad FAQ source](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ethereum/staking-launchpad/dev/src/pages/FAQ/index.jsx)

### Does depositing more always increase a validator’s effective stake?

No. The effect depends on credential type, effective-balance limits and processing rules. The credited balance and effective stake are not always identical.
