# On-chain limit orders: price conditions and execution dependencies

A limit order authorizes a trade only under specified price or amount conditions. In an on-chain settlement system, the order may be signed off-chain and filled later by another participant. Reaching a displayed market price does not guarantee execution: liquidity, fees, validity, permissions and the settlement mechanism still matter.

## Key facts

- **Authorization:** Order data can specify assets, amounts and execution conditions. ([1inch Limit Order Protocol](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/1inch/limit-order-protocol/50bd1300315606a3d32e9021898374c9d0dc2335/README.md))
- **Execution:** A signed order still needs a valid settlement transaction. ([1inch Limit Order Protocol](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/1inch/limit-order-protocol/50bd1300315606a3d32e9021898374c9d0dc2335/README.md); [UniswapX overview](https://docs.uniswap.org/contracts/uniswapx/overview))
- **Variation:** Auction-based orders can use changing amount conditions rather than one fixed limit. ([UniswapX overview](https://docs.uniswap.org/contracts/uniswapx/overview))

## State the minimum you are willing to receive

A simplified order offers 10 units of asset A for at least 200 units of B. A qualifying fill must satisfy the signed amount and protocol rules; a chart briefly showing a compatible price does not itself execute the order.

Partial fills, expiration and cancellation differ by implementation. Read the actual order terms rather than importing assumptions from a centralized exchange.

## Someone must make settlement economically worthwhile

In UniswapX, fillers compete to satisfy signed output conditions using available liquidity. Different supported chains can use different auction mechanisms.

This is an example of conditional order settlement, not a claim that every UniswapX order is a fixed-price limit order. Execution incentives and available routes determine whether a valid fill occurs.

## A signature remains governed by its validation rules

Closing the website does not necessarily cancel an issued order. Cancellation must make the order invalid through the mechanism’s nonce, invalidation or expiry rules.

Also review token approvals and the settlement contract. An order’s price condition and an allowance’s spending authority are separate parts of the workflow.

## Questions

### Does a limit order guarantee I will trade at the limit price?

No. It restricts acceptable execution under the mechanism, but does not guarantee that an eligible and economical fill will occur.
