Key facts for Bitcoin change addresses: where the rest of a payment goes
FactDetailSource
ConservationInput value equals output value plus transaction fee.[1]
Separate outputChange is a new UTXO, not an unspent remainder inside an old one.[1]
PositionThe wallet RPC reports where it placed change; it need not always be the last output.[2]
01

Account for every satoshi

A wallet spends an input worth 100,000 satoshis, pays a recipient 60,000 and pays a 1,000-satoshi fee. It can create 39,000 satoshis of change. The original 100,000-satoshi output has been consumed; the recipient and change outputs are new records.

An explorer can show both destinations without knowing that one is your change. Wallet ownership information and derivation records explain more than the shape or position of an output.

02

Why change may use an unfamiliar address

A deterministic wallet can derive separate receiving and change keys from its key hierarchy. Generating another address does not mean opening another account with the network. Your backup must cover the keys or descriptors needed to locate and spend the outputs.

Repeatedly using one address can make activity easier to link. A fresh change address is helpful wallet practice, but it does not make the transaction graph private or guarantee that observers cannot infer relationships.

03

Do not confuse change with the fee

The fee is the difference between total inputs and total outputs. It is not a mysterious extra output. When reviewing a payment, compare the actual recipient amount and fee rather than assuming every unfamiliar output is a loss.

Different funding options can subtract fees from recipient outputs or add selected inputs. The final signed transaction is the record to inspect.

Direct answers

Questions people ask

Can I spend change later?

Yes, if you control its spending conditions and it remains unspent. Unconfirmed change may have additional wallet and relay restrictions until its parent confirms.

Inspect the evidence

The answer and key facts have stable claim links. These records retain the scope and qualification when reused.

A Bitcoin transaction spends selected UTXOs in full. If their value exceeds the recipient amount plus the fee, the wallet can create a change output controlled by the sender. A new change address is usually another destination derived or managed by that wallet, not a separate charge.
