A phrase identifies a tree, not one displayed account
Hierarchical derivation organizes many keys beneath one root. In the BIP-44 scheme, path levels separate purposes, coin types, accounts and addresses. An application still needs to choose the intended branch and discover the relevant indexes.
The path is descriptive metadata, not the recovery secret itself. Recording the original wallet and supported path helps future recovery without publishing the phrase.
An account-index mismatch can look like an empty wallet
Suppose the original application used one supported branch and displayed its fifth derived address. A replacement wallet opens the first address of a different branch. Both may be derived from the same phrase, yet the second display will not show holdings at the original address.
Compare against a known full public address. A familiar account name or zero balance alone is not enough to establish that the phrase is wrong.
Use documented compatibility rather than guessing with secrets
MetaMask documents a particular default phrase-import path and separate path choices for some hardware connections. Those are product capabilities as documented on 2 October 2026, not a promise that any Ethereum wallet accepts every possible path.
Use an appropriate documented recovery flow. Do not paste the phrase into a third-party path-search website; knowing the intended path never requires giving a stranger the key material.
Direct answers
Questions people ask
Does changing a derivation path move my funds?
No. It changes which derived address the wallet accesses. An onchain transfer is a separate operation that changes holdings.
Can a path recover an account without its secret?
No. A derivation path identifies a branch. It is not a substitute for the required seed or other authorized key material.

The answer and key facts have stable claim links. These records retain the scope and qualification when reused.
A derivation path tells a compatible wallet which branch of a deterministic key tree to use. The same recovery phrase can produce many accounts, and wallets choosing different paths or indexes can display different addresses. Recovery therefore depends on both the correct secret and support for the original wallet’s derivation scheme.
