Custodial and self-custodial Lightning wallets

Key facts
Separate account access from spending authority
An account password may authorize requests to a provider without giving you the keys that control its bitcoin. Conversely, a local wallet can hold spending keys while relying on external software or peers for connectivity and payment routing.
Ask what happens if the app or provider disappears. A documented independent recovery path is more informative than the appearance of a seed screen or a statement that transactions use Lightning.
The same displayed balance can imply different recovery work
Imagine two wallets each showing 50,000 satoshis. One requires the account operator to approve a withdrawal. The other operates LND channels and documents recovery using its seed and static channel backup. Those balances do not become equally recoverable because the numbers match.
In the LND example, the backup recovery process may close channels and depend on peers responding. It does not recreate a working channel database ready to continue every old channel.
Read the actual recovery instructions before funding
Find out which backup material is required, who maintains it, what an offline period means and which fees can arise when exiting. The answer may change with product version and channel design.
Neither custody arrangement guarantees a successful route for every payment. Sufficient usable liquidity, reachable nodes and accepted fees are separate operational requirements.

Questions people ask
Does self-custody mean the wallet needs no outside services?
No. A user can control signing keys while depending on peers, servers or liquidity services. Custody concerns authority over spending; service reliance concerns how the wallet operates.
Is every 24-word Lightning backup a BIP39 seed?
No. LND documents aezeed, which has its own recovery format. Use the implementation’s documented recovery method rather than assuming word count establishes compatibility.

The key custody question is who can authorize movement of the bitcoin behind the displayed balance. A custodial Lightning service manages that authority and credits an account; a self-custodial arrangement gives the user control of the relevant keys and recovery process. Interfaces can look similar while their failure and recovery paths differ. Also examine the software’s service dependencies and channel design, not only its custody label.
