MetaMask password and recovery phrase: which one restores access?

Key facts
| Fact | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Local access | An SRP-based wallet password unlocks the installed wallet. | [1] |
| Restoration | The recovery phrase restores accounts derived from that phrase. | [2] |
| Separate imports | Imported accounts can need their own recovery material. | [2] |
Start with how the wallet was created
MetaMask documents separate flows for phrase-based onboarding and social-account onboarding. Advice that treats every MetaMask password as disposable misses that distinction. Check the recovery method you actually configured while the wallet is still accessible.
For a phrase-based installation, changing its password does not change the underlying account addresses. It also does not make a recovery phrase that someone else copied safe again.
A new laptop needs the right recovery material
Suppose a phrase-based wallet works on a phone but a laptop is lost. The old laptop password alone cannot derive the accounts. Restoring the correct phrase in a legitimate installation can recover its derived addresses, while a separately imported private-key account requires its separate backup.
Before deleting or reinstalling a working wallet, account for every address you use and how it was added. A visible balance is not proof that one phrase controls every account in the interface.
Recovery belongs in the wallet’s recovery flow
A support message or website asking for a recovery phrase can take control of the corresponding accounts. Entering it is fundamentally different from sharing a public address for troubleshooting.
Use the wallet’s documented recovery process reached through an independently verified source. A password change is an access-management action; it does not reverse transactions already authorized with the keys.
Direct answers
Questions people ask
Will changing my MetaMask password change my Ethereum address?
For a phrase-based wallet, no. The password protects access to an installation; the same underlying account keys still identify the same addresses.
Does one recovery phrase restore every imported account?
No. Accounts imported from another private key, another phrase or a hardware wallet can require their own recovery method. Check each account’s origin.

The answer and key facts have stable claim links. These records retain the scope and qualification when reused.
For a MetaMask wallet created with a Secret Recovery Phrase, the password unlocks that installation; the phrase restores its derived accounts. Knowing only the password does not recreate the wallet on a new device. MetaMask’s Google, Apple and Telegram onboarding has a different recovery model, where the password and social account matter together. Identify your setup before resetting anything.
