Why sending USDT on TRON uses Energy and Bandwidth

Key facts
A token transfer uses more than a balance check
A plain native-asset transfer and a token-contract call do not perform the same work. USDT is handled by a contract, so execution resources are relevant in addition to the space taken by the transaction.
Holding USDT does not automatically provide those resources. A self-custody wallet can therefore show enough USDT for the payment and still lack the required resource or TRX capacity.
Read a resource estimate in its own units
Illustrative arithmetic: if an operation needs 60,000 Energy, 40,000 is available and the applicable burn price is hypothetically 100 sun per uncovered Energy, the remaining 20,000 would cost 2,000,000 sun, or 2 TRX, before other applicable charges. These are example inputs, not a current transfer quote.
Actual charging can depend on resource allocation, deployer sharing, contract state and dynamic Energy rules. Query the current estimate and parameters rather than copy a fee from an old screenshot.
A spending cap does not improve the transaction
The fee_limit field caps the caller’s total Energy budget, including Energy drawn from stake as well as the TRX-burn portion. Raising a cap does not reduce the work a contract performs or create resources. It also does not correct an invalid recipient or an unsupported deposit route.
Resource delegation and staking involve their own controls and timing. An offer to rent Energy should be assessed as a separate service arrangement, not accepted merely because it promises a cheaper transfer.

Questions people ask
Does free Bandwidth mean sending USDT is free?
No. Bandwidth and Energy are separate resources. A contract transfer can have enough Bandwidth and still require Energy or a TRX payment for computation.

A USDT transfer on TRON calls a token contract, so it uses Energy for computation and Bandwidth for transaction data. Available resources may cover part or all of the cost; otherwise TRX can be burned under network rules. The required resources and current chain parameters matter, so there is no single permanent USDT transfer fee.
