Key facts
| Fact | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Volatile backing exposures are paired with approximately matching short derivatives positions. | [1] |
| Portfolio | The described backing can also include stable assets that do not need the same hedge. | [1] |
| Risks | Ethena separately identifies funding, liquidation, custody and exchange-failure risks. | [2] |
Separate price exposure from operational exposure
A spot asset and an approximately equal short position can offset part of their price movement. That accounting relationship does not make the two positions operationally identical to cash.
The hedge relies on instruments, venues, collateral arrangements and execution. A dollar target remains a design objective, not a guarantee that every stress scenario is neutralized.
Use the portfolio described at the relevant date
Documentation retrieved October 2, 2026 describes a diversified backing approach, including stable assets and hedged volatile holdings. An older explanation limited to one collateral type can therefore omit part of the stated design.
This article does not claim current portfolio weights or independently verify issuer-reported holdings. Those require dated supporting observations.
USDe and staked USDe have different roles
USDe is the synthetic-dollar token; sUSDe is the staking-share arrangement through which rewards can accrue. A quoted sUSDe reward rate should not be presented as an automatic return earned by every USDe holder.
Both depend on the underlying system, while staking adds its own contract and withdrawal conditions.

Questions people ask
Does a delta-neutral hedge eliminate every risk?
No. Offsetting price exposure does not eliminate funding, liquidation, custody, exchange, execution or stable-asset risks. Ethena’s own documentation lists these separately.

USDe is Ethena’s synthetic dollar, designed to maintain a dollar reference using a backing portfolio and hedges on volatile exposures. The retrieved documentation describes both hedged volatile assets and stable backing assets. This differs from simply holding one bank dollar per token and introduces funding, custody, exchange and execution dependencies.
